Commercial Demand Charges: How Solar Cuts the Biggest Part of Your Bill

For most homeowners, the electricity bill is straightforward: you pay for what you use. For businesses, it is considerably more complicated — and considerably more expensive.

If you operate from a commercial premises, there is a good chance you are paying demand charges, sometimes called capacity charges or Maximum Import Capacity charges. These can account for a significant portion of your total electricity costs, and they are often the least understood line on the bill.

Solar, when designed with demand in mind, can make a substantial dent in this cost — not just in your units consumed, but in the peak demand figure that sets the rate you pay.

What Are Demand Charges?

Demand charges are fees based not on how much electricity you use overall, but on the maximum rate at which you draw power during a given period — typically measured in kilowatts over a 30 minute window.

Your network operator and supplier reserve the right to charge you based on your peak demand because they need to ensure the grid infrastructure is sized to meet your highest possible draw. Even if that peak only occurs for 30 minutes a month, the charge is applied across the whole billing period.

For energy intensive businesses — food production, manufacturing, cold storage, commercial kitchens — these peaks can be substantial. And if your peak demand rises over time as your operation grows, so does the charge.

How Does Solar Reduce Demand Charges?

A well designed solar installation reduces the amount of power you need to draw from the grid during the day. On a clear day, your panels may cover a significant portion of your operational load, meaning the peak you create on the grid is lower.

The key word is "designed." A system sized purely for annual kilowatt hour output may not be optimised to flatten your demand peaks. At Freedom Energy, we analyse your half hourly consumption data to understand when and how your peaks occur, and we design your system to address those windows specifically.

When solar is combined with battery storage, the effect is even more pronounced. Batteries can be programmed to discharge at precisely the moments when your demand would otherwise spike — shaving the peak before it registers on your meter.

What Does This Mean in Practice?

The savings vary depending on your tariff structure, your consumption profile, and your contracted Maximum Import Capacity. But for businesses with high demand charges, the financial case for solar becomes compelling very quickly.

It is also worth noting that reducing your grid dependency is not just a cost saving measure. For businesses working toward net zero commitments or sustainability reporting requirements, a demonstrably lower carbon footprint has value beyond the bill.

Is Your Business Ready to Look at This?

If you have not reviewed your electricity tariff structure recently, now is a good time. Understanding what proportion of your bill is made up of demand or capacity charges is the first step to knowing how much solar can save you.

Freedom Energy works with commercial clients across a range of sectors to deliver renewable energy systems that are engineered around real operational data, not estimates. We would be glad to carry out a detailed assessment of your site and consumption profile.
