Solar Myths That Still Stop People
Despite a decade of significant growth in UK solar installations, certain myths persist — and they are still stopping people from making a decision that would benefit both their energy bills and their long term security.
Here are the most common ones, along with the reality behind them.
"Solar Doesn't Work Well in the UK Because of the Weather"
This is the most persistent myth of all, and it is simply not accurate. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. Even on an overcast day, your system is producing power.
The UK receives enough solar irradiance to make solar installations economically viable across most of the country, including the South West, where Freedom Energy operates. The South West is in fact one of the sunniest regions in the UK — and consistently among the best performing areas for solar generation.
Modern panels are also increasingly efficient at capturing diffuse light, meaning the technology is better suited to our climate than it has ever been.
"Solar Panels Require Constant Maintenance"
In practice, solar systems require very little maintenance. Panels are designed to withstand British weather, including wind, rain, and frost. Rain typically keeps them clean enough to maintain good performance, though a periodic inspection and clean — particularly in areas with significant bird activity or tree cover — is worthwhile.
The main maintenance task is keeping an eye on your monitoring data. If something changes, you want to know about it promptly. Beyond that, a professional inspection every few years is all most systems need.
"You Need Planning Permission"
In most cases you do not. Solar panel installations on homes are classified as permitted development in England, meaning no planning application is required provided your system meets certain conditions around size, placement, and proximity to listed buildings or conservation areas.
Commercial installations follow a different set of rules, but these are well understood by an experienced installer. Freedom Energy handles all planning assessments as part of the project process, so this should never be a reason to pause.
"Solar Panels Don't Add Value to Your Property"
The evidence increasingly suggests otherwise. With energy costs remaining high and buyers more aware than ever of running costs and sustainability credentials, a well installed solar system is viewed positively in the property market.
Energy Performance Certificate ratings are a tangible measure of a property's efficiency, and a solar installation will typically improve yours. For homeowners planning to sell in the medium term, this is a meaningful consideration.
"The Payback Period Is Too Long to Be Worth It"
Payback periods have shortened considerably as panel costs have fallen and energy prices have risen. For most residential systems installed today, a payback of six to nine years is realistic, depending on usage patterns and system size.
With panels warranted for 25 years and often lasting longer, the years beyond payback represent pure return. The maths are compelling once you model them properly.
Freedom Energy will always give you a realistic payback estimate based on your actual property and consumption — never an optimistic marketing figure.
